  • RE: About an Icon

It’s been exactly 24 hours since I posted that image of the Twitter-Tweetie icon.

Last night, after seeing that the update from Tweetie to Twitter iPhone app had a new icon, I wondered why they chose to use this new one, as many did. I looked on the web for the original Atebits design and a Twitter bird. For no other reason than to have fun I started doing another version of the icon (something like an unsolicited “Rebound” if you like).

I uploaded my “shot” to Dribbble being curious about what the designer community would think about it.

At this point, never on Earth I’d thought it could become this big, specially with my very small but great group of followers in both Twitter & Dribbble.

When I woke up today I saw the image had 10,000+ views. I almost freak out. All these comments, all these “likes”, all these new followers… And I really appreciate all the comments and support from the players. Still, something was not 100% right.

Right after I posted the icon, I cc’ed Atebits and Tim Van Damme, to know their take on this. Tim is one of the designers I admire the most, and from whom I’ve learned a lot (thus his opinion matters to me). From time to time I’ve asked him for his thoughts on this or that, and almost always kindly gets back to me

As said, it was only an idea. Nothing more. I would never propose this to Twitter for the only reason that the original design is not mine, its from Atebits, I only modified it.

Now, the discussion about Twitter decision to use blue and not gray, I totally understood it after Mark Otto and Doug Bowman from the Twitter design team nobly commented explaining the situation.

Of course, Twitter brand is blue, and blue needs to be. One should never question Twitter’s decisions when it comes to design, they have done great things and I’m sure will continue to do so. It’s like telling Facebook to do their icon in grey, just doesn’t make any sense. Tweetie was grey.. but Tweetie is kaput.

As for me, I am still in overdose of ecstasy. Good or wrong I believe we must express ourselves and do what we are passionate about as you well said Tim.. and do it forfun

And my friend, as Kevin Carroll said,

So . . here’s my checkbook and my car-keys, my credit card bills and my 401K statements. I am officially resigning from adulthood. And if you want to discuss this further, you’ll have to catch me first, cause . .

    “Tag! You’re it.”
